Taking the Plunge – a Recap of Advice to Entrepreneurs by Autumn Edmiston

The November 2012 issue of New North Business Matters focuses on small business entrepreneurs.  “Taking the Plunge,” beginning on page 12, explains how entrepreneurs, who have gone out on a limb, start a business. These business owners give insight on what it takes to be successful.  New North Business Matters has included a variety of businesses that range from photography to fitness and coffee shops to automobile restoration.  Each business entrepreneur answers the question “What is the secret to success?”  Now more than ever these entrepreneurs have contributed to the strength of our country by creating new jobs for the American people.

One of these entrepreneurs featured in New North Business Matters, is Autumn Edmiston.  Autumn is the founder of the Edmiston Group and describes her 5-year experience as an entrepreneur.  The Edmiston Group provides senior level marketing management services to businesses and non-profit organizations on a short or long term basis focusing on: business development, marketing, strategic planning and public relations.  Autumn saw first hand the need for management services after watching companies attempt to keep up with the increasing responsibilities and demands of business ownership.

On page 18, Autumn responds to the following questions:

What was the biggest challenge or obstacle that you faced?

Autumn has endured obstacles and challenges with her business.  For example, there are a wide variety of business tools and aspects that can become very overwhelming. She has found that with a clear understanding and focus on what she can offer along with what is needed, you can manage a rewarding business.

What was the best decision you made?

“Re-branding my company” as Autumn refers to the company offering more than she was advertising.  Autumn used this to identify the business strengths and define what it is that she does.

What advise would you give to someone wanting to start his or her own business?

Identify a need that you can fill for the area that you will service.  Autumn added to join a chamber of commerce and get involved in the community, pointing out that people do business with those they like and trust.

What would you say has been the secret of your success?

Autumn answered with the Golden Rule,    “… I treat every client’s business like it is my own.”
